Mariposa Garden

at Kalorama Park

Welcome to the garden

Mariposa Garden at Kalorama Park is community engagement at its most beautiful. Founded by and completely supported by volunteers, what were once abandoned and weed-covered beds has become a space that is as beautiful to the eye as it is welcoming to our smallest and most important resident, the butterfly. The space is proof positive that with beautiful vision comes beautiful results.

Named for the workhorse of the garden, the mariposa, the terraced layers of vibrant flowers sit just atop the basketball courts, each having grown from seed with love. Founded and deeply cared for by Diana and Sterling alongside a dedicated crew of neighborhood volunteers, Mariposa Garden has grown into a community haven where you’ll find gardeners (expert and novice alike) deadheading, weeding, seeding, and watering all spring, summer, and fall.

Contact Us

The garden grows because of volunteers and supporters across the city. Why might you contact us?

  • You’re interested in volunteering. Note that there are watering shifts throughout the week, and group volunteering takes place on weekends. Volunteers are kindly asked to provide their own gardening gloves, hand shovels, or other tools.

  • You’d like to make a financial gift to support the purchase of tools and materials that allow Mariposa to thrive. Every woodchip, fence post, garden house, and seedling is 100% funded by generous donations from the community. You can do so here, but please use the form for questions on giving or if you’re interested in making an in-kind, non monetary gift.

  • You run a local business and are interested in partnering with us for an upcoming fundraiser (note that no events are permitted within the garden).

  • You have questions/feedback/requests from the core volunteer team.
